The loudest sound that’s ever been recorded was the explosion that came when the volcano Krakatoa erupted in 1883. You could hear it 3000 miles away and apparently the shockwave it sent out went round the world 7 times!
As for the loudest thing in the world today…well apparently the Blue Whale’s calls can be heard 100 miles away. It might not be the loudest thing in the world today (though I THINK it is) but it’s certainly the loudest animal.
Hope that’s okay. Some great questions in the Live Chat today by the way – good work 🙂
Hey conal7cafc,
There was a huge event called the Tunguska event. It was a massive explosion that occurred near Russia, at 7:40 AM on June 30, 1908. The explosion was caused by a meteroid coming from 3-6 miles above the Earth. The speed it hit the earth was the same as a 1000-Mega-ton bomb going off with a decibel rating 300-315. The Krakatoa volcano was only 180 decibels…….a whisper compared to a meteor. But a babies cry is around 120 decibel’s which is louder than a car horn….ouch
