The Peregrine Falcon is the fastest animal alive now. Apparently it can reach speeds of up to 242 mph! It flies up at great heights and, when it spots prey, it goes into a really steep dive, building up the incredible speed as it goes in for the kill. Now that may sound like falling with style but it has total control over what it’s doing – if it didn’t there would be Peregrine Falcons splatting down on the ground all over the place!
It’s possible that an animal that is now extinct was once able to beat this speed but we don’t know about it if it existed.
Ian beat me so he is clearly faster than me! Like Ian said its possible that there was once a faster animal but since we only have fossils we can make guesses about how fast an extinct animal could move but we can’t be sure.
Ian is very fast 😉 The Peregrin Falcon is the fastest animal now… in the air. On land it’s the Cheetah, which goes at about 75 mph and on water it’s the Marlin, which is a big fish that has a spear on it’s head and goes at about 80 mph…
nothing to add really. I suspect that the fastest animals ever were some of the dogs that got sent up to test space ships at the beginning of the space race.
Hi karlinin,
Everyone is right about the eagle….BUT
The fastest any animal has ever travelled in the world…in history was……. 833.9mph (4 times faster than the eagle) and it was a human 🙂
This was the Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, who jumped from the edge of space and broke the speed of sound barrier. He is and probably will be for a very very very long time the fastest animal has travelled in the world.
