      Hi,

Good question. If we go back far enough everything on earth evolved from the same thing. We don’t know much about the origin of life but whatever it was must have been some kind of replicating molecule about 4 billions years ago. What we do know, however, is that all life on Earth is very similar in its fundamental structure. We share a universal genetic code, cells operate in roughly the same way, and so on. Although we are primates like monkeys we did not evolve from a monkey or anything that is alive today. Chimpanzees are our closest living ancestor, this means that if we go back in evolutionary history, humans and chimpanzees both evolved from a simular animal, but this animal would not much like a chimp or a human because since then we have both spent time evolving along our own path.

Still its amazing to think we share 98.8 percent of DNA with chimps!!
