DAY 1: Dara O’Brien and the brain

And so it begins…

I’m a Scientist June 2013 has got off to a busy start. Across all zones we’ve had around 30 live chats, a few thousand questions asked outside of the chats, and there are now 3,300 students registered!

Today’s highlights in the Tin Zone:

  • We find out who Hannah’s favourite scientist is:

bill2055 : hannah do you have a favourite scientist

hannahbrotherton : This is a weird one, but it is Dara O’brien…..the comedian from Mock the week. He did a masters degree in physics and still does some research along with his comedy. He is funny and clever and I love that mix

  • We learn more about the brain:

skythekidrs2 : what do the particles in are brain look like

hannahbrotherton : this is an amazing question. The brain is unique and does not have ‘particles’ it is entirely made up of electricity. Think of that……..elec tricity in our brain. Our thoughts, soul and mind is made up of electricity, just like that in a light bulb. But there are little particles known as neurotransmitter s that travel through the brain carrying information.

  • And Ian’s enjoyed the first day of questions:

ianwilson : @modjosh There’s been a fantastic range so far. There’ve been some really tough ones! Gave my brain a good work out and I learned a few things myself looking a couple of things up!
